James then ran the business until retiring with his son, Walter Robertson (our father), who, in 1981, decided to demolish the old farm buildings and replace them with modern purpose-built factory.
Keeping up with the times, Robertson's have moved on again and the next generation - Stephen and sister Shona - moved the business outside of Edinburgh into a modern factory in Dalkeith. With the fifth generation now following in the footsteps and continuing the family tradition.
Robertson Quality Foods began over 100 years ago (1898) when our founder William Robertson (Great-Grandfather) began to make potted meats, fruit puddings and meaty puddings in a little, two room factory, which he bought for £20. All the equipment he had was two boilers and a horse and cart which he used for daily deliveries of ice from the fish market to keep his goods fresh for his deliveries. He was known in Edinburgh as "Pudding Wullie."
Then in 1926, after feeding troops in the First World War and making haggis for the Prince of Wales (Duke of Windsor) while he was at Fort George Barracks near Inverness, he bought a farm in Gorgie. Gorgie was on the outskirts of Edinburgh and he transformed the farm buildings into a factory equipped with larger more advanced machinery, allowing him to expand with new products: Scotch & Steak pies and sausages with the help of his son, James Robertson (our grandfather) known as "Pie Robertson."
